루체른 호수 위에 머문 알프스의 시간 Lucerne Where the Alps Rest Upon the Lake 마터호른과 작별한 뒤 다시 길을 나섰다. 알프스의 깊은 산골을 내려와 도착한 루체른은 또 다른 얼굴의 스위스를 우리에게 보여 주었다. 마터호른을 뒤로하고 마터호른과의 잊지 못할 시간을 보낸 우리는 다시 체르마트를 떠나 테쉬로 돌아왔다. 알프스 산골마을에서 하룻밤을 더 묵으며 여행의 여운을 천천히 마음에 담았다. 저녁은 이미 체르마트에서 먹고 돌아왔기에 호텔에 도착하자마자 곧장 방으로 올라갔다. 하루 종일 알프스를 오르내리며 쌓인 피로는 생각보다 컸다. 짐도 제대로 정리하지 못한 채 침대에 몸을 눕히자 깊은 잠이 찾아왔다. 다음 날 새벽 네 시. 아직 어둠이 가시지 않은 시간에 눈을 떠 서둘러 짐을 챙겼다. 간단한 아침 식사를 마친 우리는 다시 버스에 올라 알프스를 내려갈 준비를 했다. 다시 내려가는 산길 테쉬로 올라올 때 창밖으로 펼쳐졌던 아찔한 절벽 풍경은 아직도 생생하게 기억 속에 남아 있었다. 그래서 이번에는 일부러 반대편 좌석에 앉았다. 버스가 출발한 뒤 한동안은 가까운 절벽을 바라보지 않았다. 먼 산만 바라보며 마음을 진정시켰다. 아직 동도 트지 않은 새벽이라 산길은 더욱 아슬아슬하게 느껴졌다. 문득 이런 생각이 들었다. 만약 이틀 동안 테쉬에 머물며 알프스의 품을 경험하지 못했다면, 나는 이 버스를 타고 내려올 용기를 내지 못했을지도 모른다. 하지만 마터호른을 직접 만나고 돌아오는 길은 올라갈 때와 달랐다. 알프스가 주었던 평안이 마음 한편에 자리 잡고 있었기에 두려움보다는 담담한 마음으로 창밖을 바라볼 수 있었다. 함께 여행하던 대부분의 일행은 새벽잠에 빠져 있었다. 험준한 산길도 모른 채 고요히 잠든 모습을 바라보며, 나는 홀로 깨어 있었다. 버스를 운전하는 폴란드 기사님을 위해 조용히 기도했다. 좁고 굽이진 산길을 안전하게 달려 주시기를, 우리 모두를 무사히 ...
