English Essay

After passing through the villages of Alsace and the beautiful town of Colmar, we finally crossed the Swiss border and headed toward Bern. It was the first destination on our journey through Switzerland.

Bern, the capital of Switzerland, was smaller and more classical than I had imagined. From the Rose Garden, the entire city unfolded beneath us. The river curved gently around the old town, embracing it as though it had been carefully drawn into the landscape. Old trams moved quietly through the streets, and the city still seemed to preserve the atmosphere of medieval Europe.

There were no roses in the garden because it was winter. The place had once been a cemetery, but it had been transformed into a peaceful park where all the citizens of Bern could rest. Although the flower beds were empty, fresh green grass was beginning to rise from the cold ground.

The Rose Garden offered a magnificent view of the entire city. The setting sun was so bright that I could not take many photographs, but the beauty of the place needed no camera. Its location alone made it unforgettable.

We walked down from the garden, crossed the bridge, and entered the old city. Beneath the bridge was the bear enclosure, home to the animal that symbolizes Bern. The bears did not appear that day, perhaps choosing to remain hidden from the winter cold.

We continued through the long arcaded shopping streets. The city hall, the Federal Palace, and the government buildings reminded us that Bern was the capital of Switzerland. Yet the city itself felt modest, orderly, and almost like an old rural village.

Even near the busy central streets, turning into a single narrow alley revealed weathered buildings and quiet squares that seemed unchanged since the Middle Ages. Bern was a capital city without the noise and grandeur usually associated with capitals. Its beauty was calm, restrained, and deeply rooted in time.

Bern was the first Swiss city I encountered. As the sun disappeared and evening arrived, the temperature suddenly dropped. After walking for more than two hours, my body grew tired and chilled. We finally entered a restaurant and sat down for our first local dinner in Switzerland.

A bowl of warm vegetable soup slowly brought the cold body back to life. The soup was made with finely chopped carrots, onions, and mushrooms. It reminded me of the soup that Martin’s family often prepared for me when I lived in Prague.

I found it strange and comforting to taste that familiar soup again, this time in Switzerland. The bread and potato dishes suited me better than I had expected. I smiled to myself and thought, “Perhaps I am naturally suited to Switzerland.”

We shared dinner with the people who had come to see the Alps with us, especially Si-hyeong’s family. Until the end of the journey, the four of us would eat together like one small family. Si-hyeong’s mother ordered white wine, and that single glass helped soothe the exhaustion of the long city tour.

Warm vegetable soup, potatoes, bread, and a glass of white wine after a long walk through the cold streets—it felt like a gentle announcement that our journey had truly begun.

Traveling with people who understand one another and sharing a meal in an unfamiliar place is another unexpected gift of travel. The food warms the body, but conversation and companionship warm the heart.

Now our journey through Switzerland was about to begin in earnest. We had not yet seen the Alps, but we had been told that the mountain scenery would appear the next day as we climbed toward the cheese village of Gruyères.

I could hardly wait to see the snow-covered Alps. Everyone on the journey had come to Switzerland with the same longing. We wanted to stand before the white mountains we had imagined since childhood.

Tomorrow, we would all become Heidi for a day and set out together in search of the Alps.

From the Author

Book Quote
