Mount Rigi — Meeting the Queen of the Mountains

English Essay Translation

The cogwheel train to Gornergrat had climbed the mountain in a gentle curve, but the train ascending Mount Rigi seemed to travel almost straight upward.

It reminded me of the funicular that climbs to Petřín Hill in Prague, rising steadily without pause. For some ridiculous reason, I worried that the train might not make it, so I tensed my entire body as though adding my own strength and weight would somehow help it climb.

While everyone else calmly admired the scenery, I exhausted myself doing something completely unnecessary.

The higher we climbed, the more the Alpine ridges and pastoral landscapes opened before us. They felt entirely different from the dramatic grandeur of the Matterhorn. Here, the gentler peaks spread widely across the horizon, offering us their peaceful embrace without end.

Wooden cabins appeared here and there along the slopes, looking exactly like the little homes where Heidi might have lived. At any moment, I half expected her to run outside and wave to us.

Ah, the Alps!

I wished I could remain there for several days and climb the mountain every morning.

The train continued upward, revealing the Alps surrounding Lake Lucerne, until at last we reached the final station.

Mount Rigi.

Standing there, I understood why it was called the Queen of the Mountains.

It did not possess the overwhelming, dramatic beauty of the Matterhorn. Instead, its gentle ridges and evenly formed peaks spread around us like a vast folding screen.

What more could words possibly add before such grandeur?

I stopped taking photographs and sat quietly, gazing at the endless Alpine peaks.

Before those immense mountains, I wanted to think of nothing. I simply wanted to breathe, to look, and to become one with nature.

I thought of God, who created me and made this universe.

The Journey We Almost Did Not Take

As our departure for Switzerland approached, news of a newly emerging coronavirus in China began appearing in the media.

At first, there were no confirmed cases in Korea, and the warnings were mostly limited to avoiding travel to Hubei Province. But shortly before our journey began, Korea reported its first case, and a quiet tension began to spread.

I even started taking health supplements that I normally ignored, doing everything possible to avoid becoming ill.

I must have wanted to visit Switzerland very badly.

On previous journeys to Europe, I had traveled as casually as though visiting a neighbor. This time, however, I could not fully relax until I had boarded the aircraft and passed through immigration at Frankfurt Airport.

Perhaps because of that tension, I felt slightly feverish and unwell on our first night. My sister gave me some of the red ginseng she had brought, and thankfully, after a good night’s sleep, I felt strong again.

From the following morning onward, I traveled energetically from place to place.

Now, after seeing the Alps I had longed for to my heart’s content, I was sitting within their embrace. The feeling was almost impossible to express.

The Faces of Switzerland

What would this mountain look like outside winter?

Mount Rigi was neither severe nor intimidating, and I imagined it would be just as lovely in spring when the flowers began to bloom.

I wanted to return and see the Alps filled with green.

Spring had already begun arriving in the small Swiss villages visible in the distance. In every valley surrounded by mountains, there seemed to be a lake and a village.

I wondered what it must feel like to live in such a place.

The Swiss children I saw were so beautiful that they looked like dolls. Yet as people grew older, their faces seemed less polished and more like the natural landscape itself.

They did not appear overly concerned with hiding age or changing their appearance. They sat at roadside cafés with their wrinkles and bare faces visible, quietly drinking wine or tea.

Chocolate at the Alpine Lookout

After spending time gazing at the Alpine peaks from Mount Rigi, we naturally gathered at the lookout café before boarding the train down.

There, I opened the chocolate I had bought in Zermatt.

I shared the six-franc package with Sihyeong’s family, the Princess Family, and several travelers standing nearby.

The chocolate we ate at the Alpine lookout was smooth and delicious without being overly sweet.

Each wrapper was decorated with a different Alpine peak. With one small bag of chocolate, we shared a warm and memorable moment before finally boarding the descending train.

Descending by Cable Car

We were told that we would leave the train at an intermediate station and continue down by cable car.

Cable cars frightened me, and I wanted to remain on the train. But our guide laughed and said that our group must have a weather fairy watching over us.

We had been fortunate enough to ride both the cogwheel train and the cable car, and the summit of Mount Rigi had remained perfectly clear. He joked that our families must have accumulated blessings for four generations.

With that, he practically pushed us toward the cable car.

The view during the descent was overwhelming.

Twice, the cable car seemed to rise suddenly and then plunge downward, filling the cabin with screams and cheers at the same time.

I closed my eyes and clasped my hands tightly until the shouting subsided. Then I opened them just a little and looked around.

Ah!

On one side were the Alps. On the other were Switzerland’s peaceful villages spread across rolling hills.

The mountains surrounded the lake like a vast folding screen, while villages and green slopes extended across the far shore.

These were views I could never have seen without riding the cable car.

Still, had I been traveling alone, I doubt I would have found the courage to board it. Because everyone else was going, I followed along and was able to take in the entire landscape.

Even so, I remained so tense during the ride that when we finally reached the bottom, my legs felt weak and I staggered slightly.

By the time we descended from the mountain, darkness had already fallen.

Wondering when I might ever see the Alps again, I kept turning around for one final look.

In the distant villages, lights began appearing one house at a time. Above them, small stars had begun to sparkle in the night sky, illuminating the snow-covered Alps.

From the Author

Book Quote
