Heidelberg to Frankfurt Airport

Heidelberg to Frankfurt Airport

By Minhee Park

The Morning We Thought We Might Not Go Home

I barely slept that night. I lay awake in the darkness, turning over countless thoughts until dawn finally arrived. Only then did I drift into a brief sleep.

The sound of my sister getting ready woke me again. It was five o'clock in the morning. I quickly got up, packed my suitcase, and prepared for what would become the final day of our Swiss journey.

The weather looked anything but ordinary. A notice on Korean Air's website warned that today's flight to Korea might be delayed or even cancelled. Across Europe, strong winds and heavy rain were forcing airlines to cancel flights one after another.

When we went down for breakfast, we chose a table beside the window. Outside, the wind roared against the glass while rain swept across the streets. After breakfast we returned to our room, finished packing, and headed toward the waiting bus.

The wind was so fierce that it was difficult to walk in a straight line. It felt as though the storm itself was pushing us across the parking lot until we finally climbed aboard the bus.

Praying for One Safe Flight

Our Polish driver told us that airports in Poland had already been closed because of the severe weather. Several airports across Europe were facing widespread cancellations, and he was worried about driving seven hours back to Poland after dropping us off.

His words made the situation feel much more real. For the first time during the trip, I wondered if we might not be able to return home as planned.

Quietly sitting in my seat, I prayed that God would continue to protect our group until the very end of our journey. Around us, other travelers spoke anxiously about the same question.

Would Korean Air be able to depart today?

Fortunately, no official cancellation message had arrived. Holding on to that small hope, we left Stuttgart behind and began our final excursion to Heidelberg.

Our guide smiled and joked that perhaps our group had earned good fortune through the blessings of three generations. We had enjoyed perfect weather throughout almost the entire trip, and today, he reminded us, was simply what a real European winter usually looked like.

When the Sky Opened Again

Outside the window, Germany looked cold and lonely beneath the storm clouds. Powerful gusts shook even our large tour bus, forcing the driver to move carefully along the highway.

About an hour later, something unexpected happened.

As we left Stuttgart behind, the dark clouds slowly disappeared. The rain stopped, the wind settled, and bright winter sunlight spread across the highway.

The scenery changed almost instantly. Villages and fields that had looked grey only moments before were now glowing beneath clear skies.

By the time we arrived in Heidelberg, only a cool breeze remained. The heavy rain had vanished.

Looking up at the blue sky, we finally relaxed. It felt unlikely that our flight would be cancelled after all.

With grateful hearts, we began our tour of Heidelberg Castle, enjoying what would become the final sightseeing destination of our unforgettable Alpine journey.

A City of Red Rooftops

Our guide smiled as we arrived in Heidelberg, saying that our group truly seemed to be blessed. Somehow, the weather had stayed on our side until the very last day.

Heidelberg was bright, peaceful, and remarkably clean. From the castle overlooking the city, we stood quietly taking in the view below. Although my heart no longer raced the way it had when I first saw the Swiss Alps, the city possessed a different kind of beauty.

Like many historic European towns, Heidelberg had grown along the river. On both banks stood rows of charming buildings facing one another, creating a landscape that felt both elegant and welcoming.

For a brief moment, I almost felt as though I had returned to Prague. Nearly every rooftop was painted red, giving the entire city a warm and cheerful atmosphere. Unlike the dark timber houses we had seen elsewhere in Germany, Heidelberg's colorful rooftops brightened even the quiet winter scenery.

The wind was still cold, but standing atop the old castle, looking across the red-roofed city below, became one of those peaceful moments that quietly stay in your memory.

Our Final Meal in Europe

After walking through Heidelberg's old bridge and historic streets, we headed to a restaurant for what would be our final meal in Europe.

For the first time during the entire journey, another Korean package tour happened to arrive at the same restaurant. They were a group of high school teachers visiting Germany on a study tour.

Their lively conversations quickly filled the dining room, making me realize once again how quietly and comfortably our own group had traveled together throughout the week.

Lunch was fish served with croquettes. Unfortunately, it simply wasn't to our taste. Most of us barely touched the meal, while the group beside us enjoyed sizzling hamburg steaks and crispy French fries.

No one in our group complained, even though many of us had hardly eaten. We simply finished quietly and boarded the bus once again.

At that moment, I found myself appreciating our fellow travelers even more. Their kindness and consideration had made the journey peaceful from beginning to end.

A Small Gift of Gratitude

Before heading to Frankfurt Airport, we stopped at one final shopping center. Our guide enthusiastically introduced countless souvenirs, speaking more during that hour than at almost any other point of the trip.

My sister and I bought only a few small keepsakes—a German knife, a pen, and a bar of deodorizing soap. We had come to collect memories rather than shopping bags.

Soon it was time to say goodbye to our Polish driver.

The night before, I had quietly prepared a small gift for him. Inside the bag were gloves and masks I had brought from Korea, instant noodles, Swiss chocolates, orange juice, and a few small presents.

Throughout the trip, he had greeted us each morning with a warm smile and driven us safely across thousands of kilometers.

As everyone collected their luggage, I waited until the very end. Handing him the gift, I simply thanked him for making our journey so comfortable.

He looked genuinely surprised by the weight of the bag before breaking into a broad smile. His sincere "Thank you" was more than enough in return.

Watching him drive away, I silently wished him a safe journey back to Poland.

Goodbye, Switzerland. Goodbye, Alps.

Frankfurt Airport reflected Germany itself—simple, practical, and unpretentious.

The departure hall was crowded with Korean travelers. Everyone looked tired after long journeys, yet there was also a quiet sadness in the air.

I had hoped we might all sit together one last time over a cup of coffee before saying goodbye. Instead, there was barely enough space even to stand.

After completing check-in, we naturally drifted apart, each person disappearing toward a different departure gate.

That was when I truly realized something.

We had arrived as strangers. For a short while, we had become something like family. And now, each of us was returning to our own life once again.

Standing there, I quietly thanked every person who had shared this beautiful journey with us.

Goodbye, Switzerland.
Goodbye, Alps.
