Song of the Alps The Last Scenery Before Leaving Switzerland
By Minhee Park
Every journey eventually comes to an end. Yet the places we leave behind often remain in our hearts far longer than the places we are about to visit.
30-Second Summary
After spending our final night in Lucerne, we made our way to Zurich, the last major city on our Swiss journey. Memories from an earlier trip with my son returned as I looked once again across Lake Zurich. Before crossing into Germany, we visited the Rhine Falls, enjoyed one last Swiss meal, and quietly reflected on five unforgettable days in the country I had dreamed of visiting for so many years.
Returning to Zurich Once Again
After spending our final night in Lucerne, we departed for Zurich the following morning.
For the first time since arriving in Switzerland, we experienced what felt like a true winter's day. Believing we would only be taking a short walk through the city, I had dressed rather lightly. Instead, the cold wind greeted us with surprising force, and before long I found myself shivering as we wandered through the streets.
As I walked, memories from two years earlier quietly returned.
Back then, I had visited Zurich with my son, Jaerim. During his summer music camp in Salzburg, we found a few free days and decided to travel seven hours by train just to spend three precious days in Switzerland.
With only a short stay, we knew we could not visit many cities. Instead, we purchased the Zurich Card and explored the city as thoroughly as possible.
The card allowed unlimited travel on trains, trams, buses and even sightseeing boats around Lake Zurich. Considering Switzerland's famously expensive prices, it turned out to be one of the best decisions we made.
Three Days Beside Lake Zurich
To keep our travel expenses manageable, we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at the hotel each morning. For the rest of the day, a simple hamburger was often enough while we explored every corner of the city.
Above all, I longed to see the Alps once more.
We even traveled as far as Zug, which was included in the free transportation zone. Although distant mountain peaks appeared on the horizon, they were not the magnificent Alps we had hoped to see. Leaving without reaching them remained my only regret.
Even so, those three days became unforgettable.
Instead of chasing distant mountains, we spent countless hours aboard the boats crossing Lake Zurich. Whenever time allowed, we boarded another ferry, sailing from one lakeside village to another.
The water was astonishingly clear. Every village reflected peacefully upon its surface, creating scenery that looked more like a watercolor painting than reality.
As I watched those quiet villages pass by, I promised myself that I would one day return to Switzerland.
Now, standing here once again after all those years, I realized that promise had quietly come true.
A Brief Farewell to Zurich
This package tour allowed only a brief stop in Zurich. Had I not explored the city during my previous visit, I would surely have left with a lingering sense of disappointment.
I had hoped to take my sister aboard one of the boats on Lake Zurich so she could enjoy a cup of coffee while admiring the peaceful lakeside villages that had remained so vivid in my memory. Unfortunately, time would not allow it.
Still, I found comfort in visiting the church associated with Huldrych Zwingli and walking once more through the city's quiet streets. We were also able to spend a few peaceful moments beside Lake Zurich before continuing our journey.
The cold grew stronger as the morning passed. I wrapped my scarf tightly around my head until I looked rather like Sonya from an old Russian story, making everyone around me smile.
Our guide laughed and told us that we had simply been fortunate with the weather until now. "This," he said, "is what a normal Swiss winter feels like."
At the time, none of us realized that the truly bitter cold was still waiting for us the following morning in Germany.
The Rhine Falls, Our Last Spectacular View of Switzerland
Leaving Zurich behind, we continued toward Schaffhausen to visit the Rhine Falls. As the bus gently warmed our chilled bodies, I quietly gazed through the window, trying to hold on to every remaining scene of Switzerland.
There were still so many places I wished I could visit. If only I had one more day, I would have climbed into the Alps again just one last time. But our five dreamlike days in Switzerland were already drawing to a close, and by the afternoon we would cross the border into Germany.
Looking back over the past few days, gratitude filled my heart. I was thankful for the wonderful people who had shared this journey with us, for the clear skies that had allowed us to see both the Matterhorn and the summit of Mount Rigi, and above all, for God's gracious hand that had blessed every step of our travels.
As these thoughts quietly filled my mind, I must have drifted off to sleep for a moment. When I opened my eyes again, our bus had already arrived at the parking area beside the Rhine Falls.
The falls were not towering like some of the world's famous waterfalls. Instead, they spread gracefully across the river, creating a scene that was both majestic and peaceful at the same time.
Standing on the hillside overlooking the water, I felt as though my heart had suddenly opened wide.
Below us, schools of fish swam through the sparkling blue water, while old castles watched over the river from both sides. Walking along the wooden boardwalk beside the falls, listening to the endless roar of rushing water, I felt that this beautiful place had become the perfect finale to our Swiss journey.
One unexpected little companion made us smile even more. A single swan calmly climbed out of the lake and settled beside the path as though it owned the place.
It showed no fear of people. Visitors gathered around to take photographs, while the swan simply tucked its head beneath its wing as if to say, "Please don't disturb my afternoon nap."
We laughed for quite a while watching the proud bird refuse to surrender its favorite spot.
Our Final Swiss Meal
After leaving the Rhine Falls, we stopped in the town of Schaffhausen for lunch. It would be our final meal in Switzerland.
Fresh vegetables, salad, cucumbers, potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and sweet peppers were served together with a delicious cheese for dipping. Surprisingly, I enjoyed those simple vegetables even more than the steak that followed.
Nothing had been prepared in an elaborate way. The vegetables had simply been lightly cooked, allowing each ingredient to keep its natural flavor. Combined with the rich Swiss cheese, every bite tasted wonderfully fresh and comforting.
As we ate, Sihyeong's mother and I joked that we should prepare meals like this after returning to Korea. It seemed such a healthy and satisfying way to eat.
That afternoon she also treated us to large glasses of wheat beer, a local specialty. The beer paired perfectly with the meal, and before we knew it we were laughing together in the middle of the day over our unexpected feast.
Even after finishing both the generous meal and the beer, I was amazed that I didn't feel heavy at all.
During our stay in Switzerland, wine or beer had accompanied nearly every dinner. Considering that I rarely drank alcohol back home, it almost felt as though I had consumed a lifetime's worth during this one journey.
With happy hearts and full stomachs, we finished our final Swiss lunch before continuing toward our last destination.
St. Gallen Abbey Library
Our final stop in Switzerland was the magnificent Abbey Library of St. Gallen.
As I wandered through its quiet halls, I stood before beautifully preserved handwritten Bibles and ancient manuscripts created centuries ago by devoted monks. Their craftsmanship was astonishing. Every letter had been copied with extraordinary care and precision.
Looking at those pages, I found myself wondering what kind of spiritual conversations those monks must have shared with God while patiently writing each verse by hand. Perhaps every line they copied drew them into a deeper fellowship with Him.
I sat for a while at one of the movable reading desks beside the window, enjoying the gentle sunlight that streamed into the library. Nearby rested enormous illustrated Bibles whose beautifully painted pages invited visitors into another world.
The polished wooden floors were surprisingly slippery. We all shuffled along carefully, trying not to fall, laughing at how awkward we must have looked as we slowly made our way through the library.
After exploring the abbey, the cathedral, and the peaceful grounds surrounding them, we quietly captured our final photographs of Switzerland.
Leaving Switzerland Behind
At last, we boarded the bus once again. Germany lay about three hours away.
As we watched the scenery outside the window gradually change, I realized that my time in Switzerland had truly come to an end.
The mountains slowly disappeared behind us. The peaceful villages became more distant. One by one, the beautiful memories of the past five days quietly settled into my heart.
Every journey eventually reaches its final destination. Yet some places never really leave us.
For me, Switzerland had become one of those places. A country I would always remember with gratitude, longing, and quiet joy.
